Annual balkanian rroma summer dance workshop in Serbia

***** ANNUAL SERBIAN BALKANIAN RROMA DANCE WORKSHOP *****

Belgrade, August 1st to 7th, 2008

As each year, Simona Jovic will welcome you in her country for a 20 hours rroma and balkanian dance workshop. The workshop will be teached by Simona Jovic, Dobrosav Grocic and live musicians. Join us to learn more about how to dance on the rromani and traditionnal music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia. The workshop will be teached in english, french and serbian.

* Dance programme :

Cocek rroma dance from Southern Balkans
The biggest part of this 20 hours serbian workshop will be dedicated to this gracefull and joyfull dance, danced in the rromani communities in Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and south of Serbia. Danced by women and men, it remains very oriental with the big turkish influences thanks to the 5 centuries ottoman occupation of that area.

Vranjanska svita (with the tamburine)
Vranjanska svita is a dance and song from Vranje in south of Serbia. It is composed of three parts : first women dance part on the beautifful song "Sano duso" (7/8 rhythme). Second, the men dance called "Tesko oro". And the third part is the women cocek rromani dance danced with the tambourine on the 9/8 very fast rhythme. It is the most oriental of all traditionnal serbian dances and one the most beautifull.

Rromani Oros
Cercle or line dances from south of the Balkans. According to the rhythme, if it's regular or irregular, if it's 7/8 or 9/8, if it's slow or fast, the step of the oro will change. In this workshop will be teached only those danced by the Rroma in their mariages and festivities.

Serbian kolo
Kolo is the synonym for oro, also a cercle or line dance, but this appelation is used in Central Serbia and it is mostly assimilated to the "two bite rhytme kolos" and not the "oriental" ones. Lively and friendly, kolo is the dance of sharing between Gadje and Rroma that will give you the liberty to have fun at any balkanian festivity.

! need vegan and vegetarian musicians !

I'm a vegan singer, songwriter and nylon-string guitarist (and djembe-ist of course) living in Montreal, Canada. I'm looking to start or join a preferably vegan band in the east (or west, if you're so freakin amazing that we absolutely have to be together, I can move).

I think it would make meals on the road easier! I'm only into making a serious group, not just jammin for fun, although it will be fun of course. I'm looking for highly skilled musicians who are into travelling and working their butts off, and not blowing their brains out every weekend. I'm looking for one or more very special individuals to spend the next several years with, if we manage to pull off something successful. Which I'm sure we will. We will live and create side by side in respect, love, understanding and devotion (to our music).

I'm looking for cellists, DJs, guitarists, bassists, other string instrumentalists, drummers, hand drummers, absolutely any and all instruments. Surprise me! I'm not putting limits on genre or band makeup, or even the number of people in the band. I WOULD like one of the males in the group to be able to sing, at least backups, so that we can have both male and female (mine) vocals. I'd like that coed vocal dynamic. Also no smoking cigarettes around me, I'm a serious vocalist.

I firedance and hope to set up pretty intense stage shows.

Maybe we'll come up with something completely different, but here are some ideas:
-operatic metal
-alternative folk band
-electronica and whatever other instruments band
-alternative classical tribal band

so if you or anyone else you know might be interested, please send me a PM :)

To Anyone Interested in Studying Music in Turkey... We've finally got a Guest House designed for musicians!

...Hey guys, I'm very excited to finally be spreading the word about this. For those of you who know me or have followed my blog postings in the past, you probably already know that I've been involved in a long term project in Istanbul. I'm proud to say that Sound Fabrika Studios has finally finished preparations and we're open for business!

What we're doing here is trying to help foreigners who come to Turkey connect with some of the great musicians in the city here for lessons and music research. Right now we're running this place as a sort of guest house, but a guest house with a sound-insulated practice space, and some of the best of the youngest generation of musicians teaching and helping people like us network and get involved in the diverse and wonderful music scene here.

For a price comparable to most pensions in the area we are offering a warm bed, bathroom w/ shower, turkish breakfast and free reign to use the practice rooms here from 8am-midnight whenever classes or private lessons aren't going on. (and finding somewhere to play a davul at 11pm at night is no easy task here!). We've also spent a lot of time working out agreements with some really phenomenal musicians, and we can arrange lessons with all forms of percussion (darbuka, bendir, kudum, asmi davul, udu drums etc.) as well as oud, baglama saz, kanun, clarinet, roman violin and many more....

I'd be happy to send you more information about specific teachers and more details about our lesson programs if any of you guys are interested in what we're doing here. I'm also happy to provide some references from some of the americans that I have met coming through who have studied with some of these teachers as well, so feel free to ask. We also have connections with some prominent oriental dance teachers in the city and are happy to help dance students connect with them as well.

I got involved in this project originally because of my own experiences living in the city here my first year and trying really hard to find good teachers.... it's no easy task. I've recently been making an effort to get more video online of what some of these guys can do. You can check out Hakan, our resident percussion teacher on some of the clips I've uploaded the other day:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh93KRxAp7w

I love being able to find these great musicians work as much as I love being able to help students find really good teachers, and I think the sentiment is shared by everyone working on this with me. I hope some of you guys get a chance to take advantage of this stuff!

Feel free to drop me an email at raghebn@gmail.com with any questions, or you can try me on tribe (though I check my account here less often lately)

Kolay gelsin!

Kosmos Music & Dance Camp
June 5th-8th, 2008
Sonoma County, California

Check out the website:

www.kosmoscamp.com

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the natural charm of Camp Cazadero, located just an hour outside Santa Rosa in the rolling hills north of the Russian River among Redwood trees. Aquatic types will enjoy lounging by the pool and hiking to the nearby waterfall. All meals are provided by our professional chef, the popular Siam Moeini, and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the open-air amphitheatre, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

For those interested, the Underscore Orkestra is busy booking shows throughout the Portland OR area and planning a summer tour down through CA, to the Bay and beyond. If you havent heard the Orkestra, we are an eclectic mix of Balkan, Eastern European, Gypsy Jazz and Swing music played on an array of instruments including violins, viola, accordion, guitar, bass, harmonica, banjo, clarinet and piano. Often accompanied by variey show acts. Surely a show worth seeing. And rarely do we charge a cover. Keep a lookout for upcoming shows, and hey, ... we love meeting new musicians to jam with and share songs.

Rumen Shopov teaches at Kosmos Camp in 2008...

Rom Gypsy mulit-instrumentalist Rumen Shopov will be teaching at Komsos Music & Dance Camp from June 5th-8th, 2008. Check out the website for more details:

www.kosmoscamp.com

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the natural charm of Camp Cazadero, located just an hour outside Santa Rosa in the rolling hills north of the Russian River. The site is on 1,000 acres of open meadow and has groves of redwoods, madrones, firs and oak trees.

We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

are you a great drummer with strong legs and a kickass attitude?

On October 31, 2007, our band, The Ginger Ninjas (www.myspace.com/gingermyninja.com), and SHAKE YOUR PEACE! (www.ShakeYourPeace.com), launch the "Pleasant Revolution Tour," a rock & roll bicycle tour spanning over 5000 miles and playing over 90 shows from the Sierras in N. California, to the pyramids of Chiapas, Mexico. No sag-wagons, and no buses hauling gear: everything, including the 800 Watt human-powered PA System, will be hauled entirely on bicycle! A 14-person entourage makes the core, joined by bicycle and music enthusiasts all along the route. The tour is expected to last about 4 months.

The goal of The Pleasant Revolution Tour is to share the joys of sustainable and creative living through the spectacle of the bicycle rock & roll road show; to show America that a different way of living is not only possible, but more rewarding; to bring something positive from the U.S. to Mexico. We also hope to promote our music and of course, rock.

We're looking for a professional drummer who also loves biking and adventure to accompany us. YOU NEED TO BE EASY TO GET ALONG WITH AND A STOKED TRAVELER or we obviously won't make it to far before meltdown.

Since we're primarily a music tour, and secondly a bike tour, we're not going to be covering 100 miles a day or anything crazy like that. We'll average 20-30 miles a day, but you'll need to be in hearty condition. WE HAVE NO SUPPORT VAN! So all of the drums will be distributed and hauled by members of The Caravan on bicycle.

Compensation: All your food will be provided by the tour. Additionally all your bicycle gear needs will be totally taken care of including your Xtracycle Freeradical (www.Xtracycle.com). You will also share in gig revenues and merchandise/cd revenues.

Due to the extreme adventure nature of this expedition, it's CRUCIAL that you can imagine seeing it through to the end ~ we need someone who's going to roll as strong and long as the tour will.

Organized by the minds behind The Bicycle Music Festival (www.BicycleMusicFestival.com), and the Xtracycle sport utility bike (www.Xtracycle.com).

Yes, we're crazy. Are you?

UPCOMING RROMA MUSIC, DANCE AND LANGUAGE TOURS ORGANIZED BY SIMONA JOVIC
In the heart of the rroma villages of Rajasthan and Macedonia

RAJASTHAN - INDIA (January 14th to 21st, 2008)
Dancing the kalbelya dance with the rajasthani nomad dancers and musicians

It has been now a long time since I've been taking you each year to the heart of Rajasthan to meet this extraordinary cast of nomad musicians, dancers and snake charmers living in the Thar desert. They are nomad, each year I have to find their new camp location and it is always a big joy to find it. As always, it is going to be a several days workshop with these dancers and musicians, as always it is going to be a wonderfull human aventure, a warm welcom in their village (a very bi privilege) and of course a small performance improvised only for us. If you want to go back to the origins of Rroma people and their dances, this is a trip to do.
environmental education initiatives thus helping raise awareness of the
importance of planting trees and conservation. We work together with
governmental and nongovernmental organization to help monitor the trees.
We organize plantations in schools accompanied by the students, in this
case we prefer to plant fruit trees which also helps the students to
March for global Cooling

This reforestation will be the launch of
a new campaign to help revert global warming.

Remember that the earth does not belong to Mankind
But Mankind to the earth.

We march with the earth
and for the earth

and her voice is our voice!

www.march.nomadsuni ted.com <http://march. nomadsunited. com/>

Why reforest

Reforestations are essential activities to help revitalize the health of
the Earth and combat climate change. Today around the world the
deforestation has grown to an alarming rate exceeding by far the index
of reforestations, this brings catastrophic consequences to the
atmosphere as well as for other organisms that's depend on these forests
for habitat..

We have but a short time to avert damaging and economically debilitating
climate change. We also have all the economic, intellectual and
technological know-how to head off this calamity and avoid the
disruption and misery that inaction would entail.
The solutions are numerous and, as many economists say, affordable when
compared with the costs of complacency.

Globally, forest cover is at least one-third less than what it once was.
It is time to reverse the trends, it is time to act.

Climate change confronts us now. There is no longer conjecture or debate
around an abstract or hypothetical future. We need action. We need to
plant trees and in doing so send a signal to the corridors of political
power across the globe that the watching and waiting is over â€"
that countering climate change can take root via one billion small but
significant acts in our gardens, parks, countryside and rural areas.
Achim Steiner, Executive Director
United Nations Environment Programme

” The question is not whether climate change is happening but
whether, in the face of this emergency, we ourselves can change fast
enough”
Kofi annan
<http://www.unep. org/billiontreec ampaign/>

Our reforestation programs.

Our innovative reforestations combine the plantation of trees fused with
a multicultural events, workshops and temporary ecologically friendly
living spaces that last from a few days to several weeks. This promotes
reforestation events not only as necessary duty of each individual to
combat climate change, but coordinating a culturally appealing and
spiritually earthbinding.

Through the reforestations and creative activities and workshops we
intend to generate a deep and lasting effect, as much for the local
communities as well as for the participants and simultaneously create a
forest or of fruit orchard that can also help as nutritious source of
food of the communities, as well as to absorb carbon dioxide emissions
which are exceeding on our planet.

Another key point is the life and direct experience of participating in
an temporal ecological community with all the benefits and complications
that this carries, thus also promoting ecovillage living and a more
sustainable lifestyle. Workshops are offered on a volunteer basis, We
ask from those attending consideration in order to maintain a
harmonically working community as well promoting principals of respect
towards the environment.

Participants upon arrival are advised to sign in agreement to a letter
of terms conditions that are provided upon entry, in this way the basic
concepts of communitarian life are established and the people are
informed regarding basic notions of how to behave in the environment,
preventing the space from suffering negative ecological effects.
We use horses to transport the baby trees to their location minimizing
our carbon emissions. The event is non-commercial, and is free for all,

Temporary ecovillage habitat.

Participants have the opportunity to offer workshops with a cultural or
ecological focus, like for example: Acoustic Music, permaculture, cob
brick building, African Dance, collective Intelligence, consensus and
facilitation, handcrafts from recycled materials, Horse maintenance and
care, temascal (sweat lodge), Maya calendar, African percussion, yoga,
martial arts and capoeira

In order to be able to live in this communal space that hosts a
considerable amount of people, it is necessary to distribute the work
equitably. For that reason we created the energetic administration that
equilibrates workload. Which is vital in successfully maintain an
organic community in a natural context.

In the morning, after the breakfast we form a circle of discussion where
people take responsibility for choirs and activities. The tasks are
distributed according to the amount of people that attend, divided by
the amount of necessary activities.
Usually during or after every reforestation we take the time to organize
a show for the village, that combines ethnic music, dances and many
acts. We also use the space and time to respectfully transmit ecological
messages.

This innovative initiative seeks to venture into new way of creating
events without a negative impact to environment, as well also to raise
awareness in the participants and the local communities, on the
importance of reforestations and sustainable development in a creative,
dynamic, attractive and effective method.

But even before dancing, already as very young, she sang the traditionnal rroma songs. With Demiran Cerimovic and his nine musicians, she will return to the source of her passion for the rroma culture. Together, they present the joy of traditionnal rroma music and dance from the Balkans, especially the famous coceks so typical for the Vranje area.

Simona Jovic
Dances of the Rroma
www.simonajovic.com

Dear friends,

I am leaving in a few days to Serbia, to see my family, to see my Rroma friends
and of course, prepare everything for the Serbian rromany music and dance tour
that I organise in august. A lot of people contacted me for this trip and I am
very happy to see that people are finally opened to visit these countries ad to
meet Rroma as they are! They will be very happy to welcome everyone who is truly
interested in their culture. So if you wish to join us for this trip, please let
me know as soon as possible. I prepared for you a lot of fun : dancing with the
rroma musicians, going out to some very funny places, cultural visits and of
course a stay in Guca during the famous Guca brass band rromany festival.
There, we will have the great Demiran Cerimovic (Rroma from south of Serbia, the
last year's winner) playing just for us! This trip will take place between
August 5 and 13, 2007.

For those who can't come to Serbia and wish to hear Demiran Cerimovic, it is
possible in july in Western Europe! We will be playing in Belgium (for the
national hollidays) and France (Escoeuilles first and at Avignon Festival
then). We still have a date available between july 15th and 19th. If you would
like to invite us, here is your chance to do it without paying the travel
costs! We present together the rromany music and dances from the Balkans. Nine
musicians and myself (singing and of course dancing).

And finally, I decided not to continue teaching for a long time anymore. I have
other plans and finally, these dances are difficult to teach. How to explain to
people something they you don't explain, that you feel only? But I still have a
few upcoming workshops, the next one is Athens where I will be teaching the rromany dance from Rajasthan and Egypt and then in Paris on june 23 and 24.. I will teach 4
differents workshops, rroma dances from Rajasthan, Turkey, Serbia and Central Europe. You are welcome to book your places.

For any information, you can contact me at contact@simonajovic.com

I love to watch people and especially when they have a desire to play music, I would hang at the beach and although I couldn't play an instrument I would sometimes sing along to the songs or just listen. Some of my best memories. Music brings people together!

Call to street performers for Brooklyn Parade and Art Festival!

ArtsInBushwick.org

We're looking for individual performers and troupes to perform at Maria Hernandez park after a parade through Bushwick on Saturday June 2nd. We are also accepting any and all types of performers for different venues throughout the weekend. Register at ArtsInBushwick.org or email performance@artsinbushwick.org.

Artists and residents of Bushwick are creating the Bushwick Open Studios & Arts Festival to bring to light the hidden aspects of Bushwick.

Breaking with the past and taking inspiration from the self-organizing structure of Web 2.0, the event and its planning is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Currently, more than 80 artists and community members are involved in planning and producing the event. The festival is an open and inclusive event that benefits the entire community by sharing artistic projects and encouraging community interaction and dialogue.

Walking or driving through the industrial area of Bushwick, you might miss the hundreds of artists working in the area’s lofts. The Bushwick Summer Arts Festival brings these artists and performers out into the streets and into view of each other, other community residents, and the general public. The community organizers hope to inspire a diverse group of participants, such as local high school students, car art painters, and a variety of musical groups, to share their work in an open, welcoming and inclusive forum. Organizers are working with local businesses, nonprofits, and arts organizations, which may provide venues, create events, or offer funding. Some volunteers are planning interarocess itself. The June 07 event will be amazing, but equally important is what’s happening right now. By coming together to plan a creative event, people are connecting and collaborating, thereby strengthening our community.”

Artists and organizers are available to talk about their plans and process.

Last year, more than 120 artists participated and hundreds more community residents and others attended the event. This year the organizers expect even more participants. New activities this year will include more performances, more outdoor events, and a series of facilitated discussions and panels. The panels will focus on the past, present, and future of the Bushwick community, the role of the arts in Bushwick and other neighborhoods in New York City, and the question of gentrification and sustainability in our community.

The festival is organized by a group of volunteers under the name Arts in Bushwick, and in cooperation with other area nonprofits and businesses. This is the third Bushwick Open Studios event since 2005, but the first to be organized by Arts in Bushwick.

Register at ArtsinBushwick.org

Hi All,

WyldeFyre Productions puts on a live show every 1st Thursday at Amy's Ice Cream on Far South Congress. The next show is April 5, 2007. The event opens at 6 with fire spinning classes, then belly dancing performances, then we have fire dancing performances & then we have open performance with live drumming & dancing (all types). We need live drummers (all style welcome - middle eastern is great for the belly dancers, african for the fire dancers, etc) & dancers (belly dancers, fire dancers or other ethnic dancers are all wanted). Please feel free to email me at AmberBarbara@hotmail.com or here within Tribe - Austin - AmberBarbara for more information.

I hope the drummers can make it out with us. Live drumming makes the show for me!

Ethnic Drumming & Dancing exhibitions/performances will also be considered.

Thanks in advance,

AmberBarbara

help - last three days!

Help support a fellow gypsy musician...

So it's down to the wire, people. I apologize for this impersonal message,
but I'm at a point where I need to call upon the resources of
everybody I know, and everybody THEY know...

I'm in a battle of the bands, the Deadwood Derby - or I WILL be if I
can stay in the top 16 for three more days. Everyone has one vote per
24 hours, and I humbly request that you go to the website below and
vote for me at least once, and please three times if possible. If you
can convince anyone else to help out as well, I'd be very grateful -
the bands who have secured their place in the competition have turned
their fans' votes towards their friends' bands, and so I stand to be
removed from the line-up by rampant croneyism if I don't have your
help.

Here's the page where you can go to vote:

www.lawrence.com/contests/deadwoodderby2007/

The last day of voting is 18 March. If you'll vote for me (such a
minimal investment) I will write your name on a list which I will bear
on my sleeve and wear into battle - that is, I will perform at this
battle of the bands in honor of everyone who supported the underdog
and allowed me to show them what I've got. No kidding.

Again, forgive me for the impersonal message...I doubt something like
this will come up again for a long time.

much love

Hi everyone!

If you or a loved one are interested in learning traditional Middle Eastern music and the rhythms that accompany those songs, well look no further!

Carmine Guida and I (Melissa Murphey) have recorded an instructional CD that has 12 plain straightforward songs that will enable drummers or musicians to learn to play the traditional tunes.

This CD includes such classics as Layla, Misirlou, Shisheler, Fire Dance and Sulukule. There are no distracting vocals or excessive ornamentation here, just the plain songs for learning purposes. The MP3s are available for immediate download at www.dorku.com. they are only 1 dollar each!

All soundfiles are in the same key as the sheet music available at www.dorku.com.

In addition, GUITAR TABLATURE is now available for select Middle Eastern songs at www.dorku.com. Sheet music is available for key of C instruments, B flat instruments (trumpet, clarinet , soprano and tenor sax) and Bass clef instruments (cello, trombone, baritone)
Know a Falmenco Guitarist who interested in playing with Pele's Tears?

This Winter percussionist Kashia put together a group of musicians, including Estas Tonne, myself on Didjeridu and original Mystical Spoken Word ( a la Rumi/Hafiz) and Papillon , an enigmatic Ritual Belly Dancer as well as Kashia on Dumbek. We played Live and it was truly something. We are wanting to recreate this magic with a new guitarist, as Estas has continued to follow his Muse and moved on from the Bay Area. We put a second grouping of musicians together and performed at the Sea of Dreams with Ken Becker on Cello as the ensemble 'Pele's Tears', and to date are still seaching for a new hand on guitar.
My music and poetry are accessible at www.cdbaby.com/traviswernet as well as www.myspace.com/traviswernet
and I can be reached at e-mail: didjfish@sbcglobal.net, or cell 510-301-6165... All Blessings, Travis

02/10/07 Sat @ The Speakeasy - Sacramento, CA
02/12/07 Mon @ The Attic - Santa Cruz, CA

While most progressive minded bands (for lack of a better term) pride themselves in mixing and matching unrelated musical genres together, Santa Cruz's Estradasphere take it a step further by inventing and then naming entirely new hybrid styles! Among the crossbreeds slated for inclusion in 2006's Palace of Mirrors: "Romanian Gypsy Death Metal," "Spaghetti Eastern," "Bulgarian Surf," and damn it if these outrageous cocktails aren't masterfully realized in the likes of "Smuggled Mutation," "Six Hands," and "The Terrible Beautypower of Meow," respectively. Also to be found on this wild ride of an album are the industrial noises of "The Unfolding Pause on the Threshold," the beautifully arranged soft jazz of "The Debutante," the far-Eastern-funk-video-game-jingles of "Those Who Know," and symphonic orchestrations both lush, stately and relaxed (see the title track), and swinging, strutting, pouncing and lounging like a Monty Norman Orchestra James Bond theme (see "Colossal Risk"). Elsewhere still, the nightmarish "Flower Garden of an Evil Man" comes off all growling bass and ominous tones, while "Palace of Mirrors Reprise" wafts from polka, to circus music, to music box lullabies, to haunted castle organ music, and, finally, "Corporate Merger" trades in keening Arabic violins for metallic blastbeats and heavy electric guitars during a cathartic finale that's pure post-Mahavishnu (mountain-toppling closer "The Return" is even more intense in that last regard). Oh yeah, and all this without a word -- Estradasphere have gone instrumental on the whole of Palace of Mirrors, which winds up shining an even brighter spotlight on their impeccable and astounding musicianship.

Art SF is looking for some gypsy / roma style musicians and bands for benefit. We are an all volunteer group of artists, musicians, and performers raising money to buy a warehouse and create a new community art center. Our current space is at 110 Capp St. For more info about us check out our tribe page. There are some Balkan music specialists organizing this event. DJ Zeljko will be mixing Balkan music from Saban Baramovic to Boban Markovic. Part of the funds raised will go to help the Hleb i Sir Cirkus (Bread and Cheese Circus) who go to Kosovo and make free circus shows for Serbian and Roma refugee children. Next summer they will go on their 5th annual trip to Kosovo.

The Saddest Music in the World-the film

This movie so f*ing funny. Warning, it has that really dry Canadian humour, it is synical of everything and totally immature, but funny.
It includes music from all over the world. Schopenhauer would think that it is blind and struggling, and funny.
Cheers.

KAL Romany Band from Serbia on USA Tour __NOW***

Featured Music Preview
9/21/2006

Kal
Serbs from the Urbs

Writer: MANNY THEINER
info@steelcitymedia.com

Dragan Ristic is more than happy to ride the bandwagon of interest in Balkan-influenced punk (Gogol Bordello, Devotchka) and Eastern European brass bands that’s sweeping through hipster circles from Brooklyn outward. Just don’t tar Ristic, or his acclaimed band Kal, with the term “gypsy.” A resident of Belgrade, and Serbia’s stark apartment blocs, he would prefer to see the word become politically incorrect.

“In the Romani language, the word doesn’t exist. We call ourselves Rom,” he explains, “like Americans call themselves American. To 90 percent of the world’s population, the term ‘gypsy’ is pejorative — it means dirty and untouchable. And another reason: In 1971 in London, the Romani International Union decided on our flag, our anthem, and our official name. So that’s what should be used.”

He also believes that a united Europe isn’t taking Romani culture as seriously as it should. “Europeans aren’t conscious of how important Romani are for their culture. Cervantes, Garcia-Lorca, Bartok, Pushkin and others used Roma issues and themes as central in their books or music. And don’t forget about Bizet’s Carmen. We deserve to have a place in European culture.”

That said, Ristic’s not surprised that electronica stars Basement Jaxx released the Gypsy Beats and Balkan Bangers compilation, then incorporated its influence on their recent Crazy Itch Radio album. And don’t get the impression that the current craze for Romani style is anything new, either, he stresses — and we’re not just talking about the Gypsy Kings. “In the ’70s in Russia, Roma music was very prominent. During the ’60s, Serbian director Alexander Petrovic won first prize in Cannes with Roma themes in The Buyer of Feathers. Now, with the new wave again emphasizing Romani culture, it’s time to use it for our own rights.”

Ristic thinks the preservation of Romani culture is so important that he runs a summer program (Amala Summer School, near his home village of Valjevo) to teach Roma language, music and history to people from all over the world. His brother Dushan, who co-founded Kal (which means “black” in Romani but “good” or “correct” in Greek) has since retired from the band and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area as a professional painter, but returns to Serbia each summer to help out. “You need some kind of music skill,” Ristic explains. “Students stay two weeks in our houses. We bring them to weddings and baptisms, we show them Serbian historical monuments, and we welcome them to the Romani ghetto.”

Much like his urbanized countrymen, Ristic loves modern pop music, from B.B. King and Deep Purple to Manu Chao and Lambchop. And adaptability is a hallmark of the Roma people, so Kal’s new album straddles the line between “world beat” and traditional strains. But don’t get Ristic started on the flagrant abuse of electronic keyboards.

“In the Balkans during the ’90s, when the Communist regime fell down, moral values were destroyed, and it showed up in the music. [Romani] started to use ’80s keyboards, and the arrangements and lyrics were cheap, bad and kitsch. If you were living in Serbia, you couldn’t avoid hearing it. I think that I’m doing this in a proper way because I belong to this generation and it’s natural for me. It’s a matter of aesthetics.”

While refreshingly free of cheesy synths, Kal boasts its share of electronic rhythms, melding Balkan melodies on violin, guitar, accordion, brass — and irresistible percussion — with bhangra, hip hop and drum and bass, courtesy of producer Mike Nielsen, who’s worked with Underworld, Jamiroquai and Natacha Atlas. With a bit of Middle Eastern mystery, and freshness of beats from the street, it’s easy to picture Kal whipping any young crowd into a dancing frenzy.

Kal’s German-based record label, Asphalt Tango, specializes in Roma music, which could be an asset if it recognizes the growing potential of the “alternative” Roma genre, says Ristic. But he may find more success with stateside labels. “Americans know better than Europeans that this is a business. I would like to make Roma music closer to the mainstream, but in a natural way — instead of Buena Vista Social Club, there could be a Roma Vista Social Club,” he says. “It’s just a question of working hard on it, good publicity, and good fortune.”

And good luck, perhaps?

Kal. 10 pm. Fri., Sept. 22. Gooski’s, 3117 Brereton St., Polish Hill. $8. 412-681-1658

true, we can travel and play what we want, but still, historically, the rom were/are their own cultures and cultures tend to develop patterns in their music and i'm wondering if anyone knows of their progressions

travelling with instruments

Namaste,

I am preparing to embark out upon the world, and I would like to take an instrument along with me. I'm not picky, I'll play, or learn to play, anything. Currently I am lugging along a fretless acoustic bass, a little to bulky and fragile, really, for the type of long haul international backpacking I envision. I would, ideally like something that fits into my pack. I had a clarinet for a while, it was a little fragile, worrying about the keys, and the reeds. Maybe a flute? A mandolin?

How do you travel with your instruments, and what do you travel with?

Aug. 10 (Thurs), 8 pm—"Levantine Worldbeat" Features Persian electronica with Bay Area-based Som'ma, and the Istanbul-based Greek-Turkish Gypsy master Selim Sesler &
Friends, Live at Fais Do-Do

SELIM SESLER's music fuses the driving improvisational energy of Thracian (Northwestern Turkish) Roman (Gypsy) wedding bands with the expressive power of Balkan Turkish folk songs. He recently appeared in director Fatik Akin's "Crossing the Bridge" documentary about musicians bridging east and west in Turkey. Selim is a descendent of a family of professional zurna players from Drama, Greece. They emigrated from Greece, settling first in Kesan's Übriktepe village as a result of the 1923 population exchange, and then relocated to Ke{an's Yeni Mescit neighborhood. Selim began by playing zurna, but
took up the clarinet in his early teens, just as many younger members of davul-zurna families began to adopt çalge wedding band instruments in the 1960s. He began
playing village weddings at age 14 and also performed in regional fairs, called panayers. In the 1980s he moved to Istanbul to develop his musical talents, joining the many
regional town Roman musicians who gravitated to larger urban centers. In Istanbul he played Turkish light classical fas?l music in restaurants, provided music for Ferhan }ensöy's musical theater, played Roman and non-Roman weddings, and made many recordings of Roman dance music Roman oyun havasa). He has performed internationally in Germany, France, Romania, Israel, and Canada, representing Roman, light classical and his own Rumeli (Turkish Balkan) musical styles. During these experiences, he has maintained his vast regional repertoire and playing style, serving as a living regional archive, as recorded on the Kalan cd, Roads to Kezan. He is renowned among Roman and non-Roman for his improvisational virtuosity, and as a premier interpreter of wedding and Roman dance tunes. This is a rare performance of Selim and friends in Los Angeles.
Som'ma is Shirzad Sharif, Jef Stott and friends. Shirzad studied the Tonbak under the supervision of Ostad Bahman Rajabi in Iran. Since then he has adapted his own unique
style of playing enabling him to play melodic rythyms on the Tonbak while accomponying various instruments, (Melody-Navazy). His skillful presentation and comprehensive teaching technique has lead to him performing and conducting seminars at prestigious
institutions such as the University of Maryland, University of Utah, UCSF, San Francisco State University UCLA.

http://www.sommamusic.com/music.htm
Listen. Shirzad is among the first Tonbak players to have researched & performed other Middle Eastern, Arabic & non-Persian techniques, rhythms & compositions on the
Tonbak, accompanying instruments such as the Riqq, Mazhar, Darabuka and Indian Tablas while preserving the unique technique and sounds distinctive to the Persian
Tonbak.

He has composed and performed many percussive compositions using Arabic, Persian and Indian drums thus connecting and creating a triangle within the three ancient regions of Persia, India the Middle East. He is also the founder of Som'ma and pioneer of a new sound he refers to as avant-garde Persian music that has its roots in Persian classical music and abstract avant-garde ideas.

Greetings in the Names of the Most High, Najis devleske!
Akharimata sa Chovihanos thaj Chovihani! (Calling all Holymen and Holywomen!)

My name is Ricardo, I am a painter & Musiscian and generally a lover of life, I live in Miami Florida USA and I do a radio show on Gypsy music.
My show airs on the FM in miami and also via the internet on 123radio.com worldwide, we have a large listening audience from all around the world and I would like to encourage anyone to take the opportunity of Radio time.
To make mention of any topics that relate to the Romani people (the beauty and the struggle).
I think that It is a very rare opportunity to have a voice for the Roma on the Radio, in a time where there still exists a bad attitude towards the Roma and also that there is now surfacing a little acceptance to this beautifull culture. Please help me to bring awareness to the people, so as to encourage equal rights, Justice and a generally favorable attitude to this beautiful culture.
My goal is to bring awareness to the general population about the romani people's stuggle and also to create a greater repect for the roma people by exposing to others and to the Roma this beautiful music and message.

Kusthi Bok!
Najis tuke!

Tune in on 105.5 FM in Miami or 123radio.com Worldwide wed. from 8-10PM USA (EST) Kushti Drom!

What do you think is of Importance in these times?
